How to Publish Online Diaries
Online diaries, also called blogs, let you write messages just as you would in a print diary and publish them on the Internet. They typically provide features such as the ability to edit or delete diary entries, the option to add digital images and the ability to limit who can view the diary. Numerous Internet companies publish online diaries for their users at no cost. Once you select a diary service provider, you can start publishing your diary immediately.

1
Choose an online diary publisher. The University of Southern California provides a chart comparing the features offered by different publishers to help you choose one (see the link in References, below). For example, both Blogger.com and Wordpress offer blog publishing free.

2
Create an account. One you have chosen a blog service, you must create an account with it. Creating an account is typically very easy. For example, for Wordpress, you need only a username and password, which you make up, and an e-mail address.

3
Provide personal or background information. This information is referred to as your profile. You can write a profile describing yourself or your interests so that visitors to your diary will have some context to help them understand your writing.

4
Select privacy settings. Depending on the publisher you use, you can limit who reads your diary in a number of ways. Publishers will provide this information on a privacy settings page. Generally, you can let everyone read all your diary entries, let only friends you select read your diary or adjust the settings for each entry, making some available to everyone and some available only to friends.

Begin writing diary entries. You can always write entries directly through a Web page on your Web browser and press a button to publish the entries to your diary. Some services also allow you to write entries on your home computer and upload them to your online diary. The information for the service you choose will be included in a Help or FAQ page on the service's site.
