The role of a bodyguard is more professional and tactical than what we typically see of bodyguards in movies and TV. Becoming a bodyguard usually begins with a strong military or law enforcement background. Escorting and surveying areas are two main roles of bodyguards. Before deciding on this career path, you want to make sure that you are physically fit and can pass the extensive training necessary to have the required skills of a bodyguard.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be in perfect health and shape. You should have no pre-existing health conditions, see with 20/20 vision and not be overweight. Your psychological health is also important as you will be making quick decisions when protecting the safety of your client.

  2. Step 2

Complete extensive physical and aptitude training in defensive tactics, weapons use, first aid and CPR, driving skills and communication. (See References below.) If you are or have been in the military, you can ask your commanding officer for available training. Armed forces in many countries offer protection training so they can assign bodyguards to officers or heads of state. You can find other training courses by contacting your local police station or signing up for a course online, such as Bodyguard Training International. (See Resources below.)

  3. Step 3

Work on your tactical skills by creating many plans for various scenarios while in training. Have a plan for when a guest gets too close to your client and always have a way to communicate without being too confrontational. Your communication skills and the way you handle situations will be just as important as your physical training.

  4. Step 4

Ask the protection specialist who leads your bodyguard training for contact information on legitimate and successful protection agencies. Make contact with the agencies once you are certified in all of your training. Protection and Investigation Services Corp. is one corporation that specializes in armed bodyguards for clients. (See Resources below.)

  5. Step 5

Contact International Executive Services LLC in Antioch, Tennessee, which is one of the most successful agencies for hiring out bodyguards. (See Resources below.)

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure that the field of protection specialist is right for you. There is a lot of traveling and time required, which means you will sometimes be working so often that there will be little time for a personal life.
