Silicone caulk is used to seal windows, areas between floors and baseboards, and showers, toilets and sinks. Caulk sometimes becomes stuck on windows or glass. There are many ways to remove silicone caulk from glass, one of which only requires household products.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Razor blade in scraper handle Sponge Hair dryer Mineral spirits
  1. Step 1

Place the edge of the razor blade under the side of the caulked area. Move the razor blade so that the middle of the blade is sitting underneath the caulk. Scrape away the caulk with medium pressure.

  2. Step 2

Plug in the hair dryer and turn it on high. Direct the heat onto the silicone, as this will help weaken the bond on the glass.

  3. Step 3

Gently use the razor again to scrape and pry the caulk away. Alternate the heat and scraping.

  4. Step 4

Dampen a sponge with mineral spirits and wipe it over the caulk with medium pressure. This will help dissolve the caulk so that you can scrape the remaining portions away.

  5. Step 5

Rinse the sponge out and wipe over the area with water to clean the surface.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not ever use a cleaning agent on the same rag or sponge that mineral spirits have been used on. This can cause chemical burns and serious health problems. Wearing gloves when using mineral spirits will help to keep the carcinogenic material out of your pores. Always use chemicals in a well-ventilated area, so as not to lose your breath. Clean any areas that come into contact with mineral spirits with a dishwater solution. This will make the area safe for people and pets again. Apply rubbing alcohol on a rag after the cleanser to shine the glass and remove any remnants of suds or residue.
