Vinyl records are readily available in vintage stores, attics, basements and garage sales, but unless you have a record player, they often end up collecting dust. One inventive and easy way to use these records is to turn them into funky candleholders. These candleholders make great homemade gifts and can add a touch of whimsy to your decor. The process is simple, because the vinyl records become pliable when heated and develop an attractive scalloped edge. All you need is an oven, some records and a few household items to transform your records into candleholders.

Things You'll Need:

  • Baking sheet 5 wine corks, approximately the same diameter as the candles Apple Tall candles
  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 200 F. Stand the corks on end in a circular pattern on a baking sheet, placing them an equal distance apart from each other.

  2. Step 2

Set the record on top of the corks. Position the record so you have at least 1 inch of space from the edge of the record to the corks. The corks serve as molds that the record will melt around, forming places for the candles.

  3. Step 3

Carefully place the baking sheet with the record and corks into the oven. Bake for 5 minutes or until the record begins to form around the corks.

  4. Step 4

Remove the sheet from the oven, and place the apple onto the center of the record. The corks may shift a little as the apple pulls the center of the record down. Carefully adjust the corks back into position, and bake for another 3 to 5 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Remove the baking sheet from the oven, and let the record sit for 15 seconds until it is cool enough to touch. The record will be very malleable. Form the record more tightly around the corks, and shape the edges to your liking. The record will cool in about a minute.

  6. Step 6

Remove the apple, and flip the record over. If the shape is not to your liking, return the record to the oven for a few minutes, then reshape it.

  7. Step 7

Light a candle, and drip some wax into each of the candleholders. Stick the bottoms of the candles into the warm wax to give them some support.

Tips & Warnings
  • Place small bowls underneath the record instead of wine corks to create a candleholder for pillar or votive candles.
