Instructions

  1. Sealing Your Granite

    • 1

Clean the surface of the granite with a dry towel or broom. If there are any particulates on the surface they can potentially scratch the granite, as well as compromise your sealer bond.

    • 2

Using the paint brush or your old rag, apply some sealer to the surface of your granite. Start with a small amount at first until you are comfortable with the process.

    • 3

Work the sealer into the face of the granite with your rag. Do not leave excess sealer on the surface of the granite or it will create a haze.

    • 4

Pay special attention to the corners and joints. If you are working with slab granite, you can seal the entire area without worry, but if you are working with a granite tile surface, be sure to coat the joints with liberal amounts of sealer to avoid water penetration.

    • 5

Allow the sealer to dry per the manufacturer's instructions; this time varies, so be certain to read the label.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are sealing a small area, you may consider a spray-on sealer rather than use a rag or a brush. You can buy either a penetrating sealer or a surface sealer; they work equally well with granite.

  • Be sure to open windows and doors in the area where you will be sealing. Wear a mask, gloves, and safety glasses for protection, as sealers (much like household cleaning products) can cause skin irritation in some individuals.
