Step 1
Base your announcement on the grandparents' personalities. If you know your parents will be happy when finding out about the baby, then sending them a gift or simply calling them may be appropriate. For those who might be less-than-thrilled about becoming grandparents, taking a more cautious and caring approach should be considered. With either choice, remember that this is your moment, and no one can take that celebration away from you.
-
Step 2
Send them a card. Announcement cards for new grandparents are a good way to break the news to your parents. Spicing up the card with a personal message or poem will add some sentimental value that only comes with a personal touch. Consider placing a picture of the baby's ultrasound in the card if it is available.
-
Step 3
Take a surprise trip to see them. Nothing makes an announcement more powerful than seeing your parents face to face. A surprise long-distance trip to announce the pregnancy to new grandparents will touch their hearts and allow you all to celebrate together. If you live close to them, taking them out for a dinner date to surprise them with the news works just as well.
-
Step 4
Avoid spoiling the moment. If you intend to tell your new grandparents-to-be the news of the pregnancy yourself, do not tell others who might talk to them first. We all have gossipy relatives who cannot keep a secret, and those are not the people to announce the pregnancy to first. Make your parents feel special by giving them the news first or by allowing them to hear from you first.

Step 5
Treat both grandparents equally. Even if your spouse's parents are already grandparents, this is still a special moment for them, too. Balance what you do for each so a hint of favoritism or resentment does not cloud your special time.
