Senokot is a stimulant laxative used to treat constipation. It irritates the bowel tissues in order to stimulate movement of the bowels. Bowel movements generally occur about six to 12 hours after initial administration of the laxative. Senokot is advertised as providing overnight relief and must not be used for more than seven days. Longer use may result in permanent changes in normal bowel movements. Senokot uses senna, a flowering shrub that has been used in folk medicine since ancient times.
