How to Obtain Potassium Nitrate

Potassium nitrate is often used as a fertilizer to nurture aquatic plants in tropical aquariums. Sold as a dry, powdered chemical compound, potassium nitrate helps aquatic plants flourish and controls brown spotting on the leaves. Unfortunately, the compound may also accelerate algae growth on aquarium glass. Potassium nitrate is generally sold by the pound, and is widely available.

Instructions

1. Check your local pet supply or tropical fish store. This may be the costliest option, but a pet store specializing in tropical fish is likely to have potassium nitrate.

2. Visit a pharmacy. Chances are, your druggist will carry high-quality potassium nitrate, though in small containers about the size of a pill bottle.

3. Go to a lawn and garden center and visit the fertilizer section.

4. Order potassium nitrate online. There are hundreds of specialty shops and online companies dedicated to freshwater aquariums that sell potassium nitrate. This may be the cheapest alternative for getting potassium nitrate if you don't mind waiting or paying for shipping and handling (see Resources).

• Potassium nitrate may be cheaper to buy in bulk online than at a boutique pet store. It's the same chemical compound regardless of where you buy it, so shop around for the best price.
