Learning how to refill Deskjet printer ink cartridges will save you money. Replacing ink cartridges can become costly if you use your printer regularly. By refilling your own cartridges, you can save hundreds of dollars a year. Refilling the Deskjet ink cartridges is easy and takes less than a half hour. If you are tired of the high cost of ink for your printer, see how easy it is to refill the cartridge yourself.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • HP ink refilling kit Paper towel Empty ink cartridge
  1. Step 1

Remove the empty cartridge from the printer and lay it on a paper towel. This will be your work area.

  2. Step 2

Look at your ink cartridge refilling kit. You will have three color ink bottles (if it is a color printer) and one black ink bottle, plus a syringe and needle.

  3. Step 3

Look on the top of the color ink cartridge. You will see holes, or markings on the identification label covering the holes. Each one of these holes represents a color or black ink.

  4. Step 4

Place the needle in the syringe. Stick the needle in the first ink bottle and draw out the recommended dosage for your particular Deskjet printer. The instruction booklet will tell you how much to use for your specific Deskjet series.

  5. Step 5

Look at the label on the top of the ink cartridge to find the correct ink hole for the ink color (or black) you are going to fill. Insert the needle in that hole and slowly start pushing down on the syringe plunger.

  6. Step 6

Monitor the ink hole as you are filling it. As soon as you see ink coming out of the hole, stop pushing down on the plunger and pull it up a bit to take away some excess ink.

  7. Step 7

Remove the syringe and wash it. Repeat the process for each ink. If you are filling a black ink cartridge, you will use the syringe only once.

  8. Step 8

Wipe off any excess ink and replace the cartridge in the printer. Place the new label that comes with the refill kit over the holes to prevent the ink from drying. Run a test page to make sure the ink circulates.

Tips & Warnings
  • If after refilling the ink your printer displays the error message that there is no ink cartridge, ignore this message and continue. This is a common problem when using refilling kits. The printer will still print.
