Step 1
Go to Google Adwords to get a keyword list. You can locate a link to it in the resources of this article. Scroll down to the "Learn about keywords" section and select the link that reads "Get keyword ideas".
-
Step 2
Type in a keyword phrase related to your website or blog. For example, if you were starting up an online dating service, you might use the keywords "online dating service". Click the button "Get keyword ideas".
-
Step 3
Via the drop-down menu on the right, hide everything but "Global Monthly Search Volume" and "Estimated Avg. CPC". Scroll to the bottom of the section and select "Add all (##)".
-
Step 4
Click on ".csv (for Excel)", assuming that is your main program of choice. Select to open the file in MS Excel. The keywords, along with the CPC and search volume, should populate.
-
Step 5
Add a new column. Title it whatever you'd like. Select cell below and type the formula =(B2*C2) in the function box. On the bottom right-hand side of the cell should be a small black box. Hold it down, then drag it to the bottom of the column where the keyword list ends. Release, and the data should populate.
-
Step 6
Sort the keyword list via your new data, selecting to organize the values from largest to smallest. If you want to, you can compare a keyword's CPC versus its overall value by sorting the keywords by CPC first, then by overall value.
-
Step 7
Use this information to decide whether or not it is more profitable to focus on a very precise niche with a high CPC and low search volume, or to strike a balance between CPC and monthly volume. Since there are many different platforms you can use to make money (blog, website, eHow, bukisa, et cetera), it's important to address the best way to make a profit from each one, respectively.
