With the invention of online banking, this has increased overdraft fees on checking accounts. Here are some ideas on how to avoid them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Online banking with debit cards and ATM's automated teller machines has caused people to stop using their check book registrar to maintain a running balance with their check books.Check book registrars are free and come with your bank checks. You need to sit down every couple days and fill in check book registrars. Record transactions as you make them to maintain a running balance.

  2. Step 2

Overdraft protection is available at all banks and credit unions. One form of overdraft protection is linked to your bank savings account. The other form is linked to a credit line which usually has a fee and finance charges for the time period you borrow the money.Banks and credit unions usually will not refund the overdraft fees unless there is a bank error that caused the overdraft.

  3. Step 3

If you are using your debit card make sure to keep the receipt and write it down in you check registrars. This is important to keep from having more then one overdraft fee. The same is true if you make a purchase online keep a copy of the purchase so you can enter it in your check registrars. Make sure to balance your bank statements at the end of each month. There is a free bank account work sheet on the back of your checking account statement with complete instructions. Most checking account holders don't know its there for their use.

on 7/3/2009 Good info. I'm always wondering about overdrafting since I don't keep a checkbook.
