Cook a New York Strip Steak Perfectly

Since a New York strip steak is so expensive, cooking and ruining the meat can be very frustrating. New York strip can be some of the best steak you have ever tasted if you know the right steps you should take to cook it just like some of the best New York City steakhouses.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a steaks that have heavy marbleing and are at least one to two and a half inches thick for best flavor. Online steaks or mail order steak are often less expensive and are often premium steak.

  2. Step 2

Allow the New York Strip steak to thaw completely before cooking. If the meat is still frozen in places it will likely be bloody and some places and hard in others.

  3. Step 3

Coat the steak in a marinade of your choosing. Brush on the marinade and let sit for 4 to 6 hours if possible to allow the marinade to soak into the steak. The best steak happens when you marinade steak for some time.

  4. Step 4

Put the oven on high broil and on the second from the top rack when cooking meat inside. For grill cooking, put the grill on high heat. Flip the steak after 5 to 7 minutes (when fat is blackend and sizzling). Cook the other side for 5 to 7 minutes as well. If the steak was an even temperature it should be done at this point. If not, you may need to flip it once more to ensure it is cooked.

  5. Step 5

Flip New York Strip steak after 3 to 4 minutes if you want steak more rare, and after 7 to 8 minutes if you like a steak very well done.

Tips & Warnings
  • Steak rubs and steak seasonings can be used instead of marinades.
  • Consider a steak of the month club for some of the best online steaks.
  • You can marinate the steak for less time if necessary, however, the steak may be less tender.
