Some of the best memories with my children were reading stories together. Today, with life the way it is, grandparents may live away and don't often have the opportunity to share these simple times with their grandchildren. This is an easy way for both parents that travel for work or grandparents living far away to share bedtime stories long distance.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • favorite story books
  • tape recorder and cassettes
  • simple bell (optional)
  1. Step 1

Share bedtime stories long distance by purchasing a tape recorder and extra cassettes, if the child does not already have one. Find very well built tape recorders specially made for children in any large toy department or toy store.

  2. Step 2

Pick a story book that has special meaning to you and your child or grandchild or perhaps a new story that you're sure will be enjoyed. Ensure the book compliments the child's age. Choose a book with colorful pictures and larger print for smaller children.

  3. Step 3

Settle into a quiet, comfortable place with the tape recorder, a small bell and a book of bedtime stories. Begin reading the story book.

Make the story more fun or exciting for the child by using animation in your voice where appropriate. Pause between page turning and ring the bell at the end of every page so the child will know it's time to turn the page and follow along.

Sharing stories with a child is always better in person, but this is an excellent way to share bedtime stories long distance. Make it a ritual to send new cassettes with story books for birthdays and special occasions. Childhood is over so quickly, so enjoy it while you can.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a tape recorder that is child friendly and easy for a small child to operate by themselves if necessary.

on 7/8/2009 Very nice. A friend of mine has an unlimited calling plan and calls her granddaughters' and reads bedtime stories that way. Either way, you're right, the time slips by.
