Step 1
I hate to waste or throw out anything. I love salads and we have leaf lettuce in the fridge most of the time. But there have been times when the lettuce has spoiled and had to be thrown out. My mother actually shared this tip with me and I'm passing it along to you:
Wash your lettuce and dry completely. Try to keep the leaves in tact as much as possible - it seems to keep longer if it is not torn into bite size pieces.
I like to use a "salad spinner" when I can and then place the lettuce on lint-free kitchen towels to dry. -
Step 2
Place the thoroughly dry leaf lettuce leaves in a glass jar with a lid that seals easily. Tighten or seal the lid. Large "Mason type Jars" work just fine for this.
-
Step 3
Your lettuce will remain crisp and fresh for at least two weeks, maybe longer, in the fridge. Use at your leisure.
In another glass jar you can combine some veggies that are favorite toppings, such as chopped onions and celery. These, too, will stay fresh for a few weeks. I don't combine them with the lettuce as the flavors will combine and some guests don't like onions on their salads.
