If you entered a green card lottery, don't fall for scams that claim they can find out whether you were a winner before you can. The U.S. Department of State is the only source of legitimate answers regarding your Diversity Visa status.
Here is how you can find out if you have actually won a green card.

Step 1

Wait for a letter in the mail. If selected as a green card winner, you should get a letter between May and July for the green card lottery that took place in the fall of the previous year. You will not get an email, however, only mail.
Step 2

Note that, if you did not win the green card, you will not be notified at all.
Step 3

If you had saved your application confirmation number, however, beginning in July you can check your DV status online at the State Department Website. It's a good idea to do so, because there is a chance that your letter may have gotten lost in the mail. The link is provided in the resource section below.
Step 4

Note that these are the only legitimate ways to find out if you won a green card. Beware of websites posing as government, and asking you to pay money for finding out your DV application status.
