Canned Hominy
Canned Hominy

Hominy is a form of corn that is often found in cans. It is a tasty food and an inexpensive starchy vegetable. It also has a long shelf life and can be eaten in a variety of ways.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Can of hominy
  • Milk, cheese, water or cornstarch if desired
  1. Step 1

You can eat Hominy straight out of the can if you want. It is a form of corn that has been bloated up to remove the cellulose corn shell. So, similar to eating canned corn, you can eat hominy cold. If the packing juice has gotten cloudy, you might want to rinse your hominy before you eat it. Hominy can be sprinkled onto a salad or mixed into your salsa (which makes it last a lot longer!).

  2. Step 2

You can also heat your hominy for a few minutes in the microwave or the stovetop. If you do this you might want to add milk and some cottage cheese or shredded cheddar, to make a delicious creamed hominy. You can mix a bit of cornstarch in cold water, and then add that to your hominy to make a thicker cream sauce. Add a few pimientos or diced green pepper for more flavor and color.

  3. Step 3

Hominy can also be ground to make grits. Ground hominy would make a reasonable substitute to make expensive recipes "go farther," like tapanades, tuna salad and guacamole.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy cheap canned goods on sale and store them.
