The first step is knowing the difference between water based lubricants and silicone based lubricants.

Water based lubricants: Water based lubricants are an all around great product. They are inexpensive, condom compatible, and easily wash off of sheets and clothing. They also rinse off of skin by just using water. Water based lubricants are safe to use with adult toys. If the lubricant begins to dry out, simply add a couple drops of water or even a little saliva to reactivate.
Many water based lubricants are flavored, which makes oral sex much more enjoyable for many people.
Those with sensitive skin should take note of ingredients in different water-based lubricants. If a reaction occurs with one lubricant, the good news is there are hundreds more to choose from.
To test the quality of a lubricant, place a drop or two between your thumb and pointer finger and rub together. Do this for two to three minutes. If the lubricant is still wet, not sticky, and not balling up, then it is most likely a good product.

Silicone based lubes: Silicone lubricants are great for those who have sensitive skin. They are usually hypoallergenic. Silicone lube does not wash away with just water, therefore it is great to use in the shower. With that being said, silicone lubricants are also difficult to get off of clothing and sheets. Many people choose to use silicone for the fact that it lasts much longer than water based lubricants. Silicone lubes don't dry out and never become sticky or tacky, they are condom safe. Silicone lubricants are usually priced much higher than water based. When selecting a silicone based lubricant, check the ingredient label. The higher in the ingredients Dimethicone appears, the better the lubricant will be.
It is important to note that silicone lubricant is not compatible with many adult toys. It will break down products made from silicone. Since jelly toys are made from "mystery" materials, it is better not to use silicone lubricant. Silicone is great for glass products. If ever in doubt, stick to a water based lubricant.
Do you have dry skin? Apply some silicone lubricant to your skin. It is a great moisturizer! This is also a great tip for those who have frizzy hair. Silicone adds shine and smooths down your hair!

Tips & Warnings
  • There are a handful of products that are FDA approved.
  • Read lubricant reviews
  • Not sure what kind of lube you want to try? Many adult stores have pillow packs (samples) of their top selling items. They are usually very inexpensive ($1).
  • There are many products that double as a massage oil and lubricant.
  • If you have sensitive skin, you might want to stay away from "warming" lubricants.
  • Do NOT use massage oils meant for foreplay as a lubricant unless it specifies on the bottle that it doubles as a lubricant. Using something that is not intended for this purpose can cause infections.
