How to Rapidly Calculate the Value of Pi
Pi is defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. It is a mathematical constant. The number pi is an irrational number, with an endless series of nonrepeating digits. This means that pi cannot be expressed as a fraction, only as a decimal. Pi is approximately equivalent to 3.141. Keep in mind that pi can only be written as an approximation, for the end of the number series cannot be reached.

Draw a large circle using your compass on a sheet of paper. Set the sharp tip of your compass on your paper and turn the pencil end of your compass around the paper. A perfect circle should be drawn. Note with your pencil where the center of the circle is located, using the impression made with the sharp tip of the compass.

Measure the diameter of the completed circle with your ruler. Make sure your ruler passes through the center of the circle when you measure. Note the diameter to the nearest hundredth place in inches.

Place your string around the outline of the circle. The string must be precisely placed on the circle. Measure and record the length of the string used to trace the circle to the nearest hundredth place in inches.

Divide the circumference by the diameter.

Calculate to any decimal place you wish. Pi is an interminable number, and the places after the decimal point will never end.

Make sure you measure accurately. However, unless you use a calculator, it is impossible to get a truly precise calculation of pi.
