Things You'll Need:
- Natural raffia Ruler Scissors Novelty pencil Double stick tape Jute or twine Craft glue Paint brush Paper plate Crystal, white, silver or gold glitter
-
Step 1
Measure and cut numerous pieces of raffia that are 4 inches long. You could do this in advance or have the children cut them for a math lesson. They should be no more than 1/4-inch wide; if they are, insert your fingernail in the middle of the raffia and split the length. This will allow for more flexible bristles that look more realistic.
-
Step 2
Wrap a length of double stick tape around the eraser end of the pencil. Lay the cut pieces of raffia over the tape, with 1 inch on the pencil base and 3 inches extending past the eraser end of the pencil. Do this all the way around the pencil top. Wrap another piece of double stick tape around the pencil broom handle and over the raffia in the same location as the first tape. Add another layer of raffia. Repeat this technique for a total of four raffia layers.
-
Step 3
Measure and cut a length of jute or twine 12 inches long. Wrap the jute around the raffia broom bristles, over the area where the double stick tape has been applied. Tie the jute into a bow and trim the ends. Add a dot of glue on the bow's knot to keep the bow from coming undone. The craft glue will dry clear.
-
Step 4
Mix a small amount of water with the craft glue, on a small paper plate, until it the consistency of milk. Paint the broom bristles lightly with the glue mixture. Sprinkle the bristles with crystal, white, silver or gold glitter. This will give the broom a magical appearance.
