3D models are widely used by the motion picture, television, and gaming industries for computer-generated animation projects. Perhaps the most difficult type of model to create is an organic one. This article explains how to create an organic model of a jellyfish using Daz3ds Hexagon. The basics can be applied to any 3D modeling program.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hexagon software
  1. Step 1

Open Hexagon. Select the "Primitives" tab and click on "Sphere." Use the tool to draw a sphere on the canvas. In the "Properties" panel, increase the number of points to 15.

  2. Step 2
    The Selected Band of Faces

    The Selected Band of Faces

Click the "Select Faces" icon. When you look at the sphere, you will see that it has a grid-like pattern on it. Select one of the faces just above the central line of the sphere. Click "L" on the keyboard. This will automatically select a band of faces around the object (see image). Use the "Universal Manipulator" tool to slightly expand this band into a bulge.

  3. Step 3

Click the "Select Points" icon. Select the point at the bottom. In the "Properties" panel click on "Soft Selection" and raise it just enough that the points of most of the faces below the bulge are at least partly highlighted. Now pull the point up to produce a concavity.

  4. Step 4

Reduce the "Soft Selection" setting until it highlights only a couple of rows. Then pull the point down to form a central tentacle.

  5. Step 5

Go to the bottom rim under the bulge, hold down the "SHIFT" key, and select every third face. Then select the "Vertex Modeling" tab and click "Quad Tessellation." Each of the faces you selected have now become four.

  6. Step 6

Click on "Extrude Surface" and extrude down several times to form outer tentacles. With each extrusion, make the tentacles narrower.

  7. Step 7

Use the "Select Points" again, set to "Soft Selection" to select the tips of each tentacle and move them about randomly so it looks like they are floating in water.

  8. Step 8

Use the "Select Line" mode and the "Universal Manipulator" to move some of the lines in on the top to give it indentation. Go to the "Properties" panel and set "Smoothing" to 2. This will give the model its smooth organic shape.
