How to Make a Laundry Hamper

If you live in a small space like an apartment or dorm, you might need an attractive laundry solution that is easy to tote to the laundromat. Laundry bags are often easier to tote and clean than large plastic hampers, but they are also more likely to get shoved in a closet and forgotten. In just a few minutes, you can make a laundry hamper that hangs from a door or hook in your bathroom, has a large opening to fill with clothes, and is also attractive.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold 1 yard of sturdy fabric in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Choose a heavy fabric such as duck cloth or upholstery fabric.

    • 2

Center the hoop handles in the middle of one of the short sides. Mark the outer sides of the handles with a fabric pencil. Draw a line from each mark across to each long side about 4 inches down. Cut off these corners through both layers of fabric.

    • 3

Sew a double seam across the bottom of the bag and along the open side through both layers of fabric.

    • 4

Fold down 1 inch of fabric on the angled cuts and pin in place. Do this for each layer. Do not pin the layers together. Sew a 1/2-inch hem on each angle.

    • 5
      Sew on the dotted line.

Fold 3 inches of fabric over a handle and pin in place. Sew a double seam to attach the handle. Repeat for the other handle on the other side of the bag.

    • 6

Turn the bag right side out. Hang on a door knob or hook. The bag can be thrown in with your laundry to wash. (Follow washing instructions for the fabric you selected.)
