Dust mops are made of microfibers and yarn, and are used to pick up any dust, dirt or small pieces of trash on a smooth-surfaced floor. They contain long handles so that their users do not have to bend over. The long handle also allows the user to move the dust mop around easily. Dust mopping is done before a floor is washed and waxed. It gets the floor ready to be properly cleaned.

Things You'll Need:

  • Dust mop Dust pan Trash can Dust mop treatment Empty spray bottle
  1. Step 1

Choose which dust mop you will need for the job. If you are dusting your home floors, you would want to use a smaller-sized dust mop. If you are dusting a school hallway, you would use a large dust mop because you have to cover a larger area.

  2. Step 2

Place your dust mop at the entrance to the room. Hold the handle with both hands, placing your dominant hand towards the top of the mop handle. You want to hold the handle at a 40 to 50 degree angle.

  3. Step 3

Push the mop forward going around the edges of the room first. If there is any furniture in the way you will have to pick it up and sweep under it. Then you can put the furniture back.

  4. Step 4

Stop every once in a while to shake the dust off of the mop. Then place the mop behind the dust and continue pushing it forward. When you finish the edges of the room work toward the center.

  5. Step 5

Use a dust pan to pick up the pile of dust and dirt gathered by the dust mop. Dump the contents of the dust pan in to a trash can.

  6. Step 6

Place some dust mop treatment in an empty spray bottle and spray the bottom of the mop. This will treat the mop so that it will attract the dust the next time you use it. Then hang the mop in a closet.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may want to walk around the room and pick up any large pieces of trash before you begin.
  • Do not pull the dust mop backwards. Always work forward. You can turn the dust mop around and do the area again if you feel that you didn't collect all of the dust.
