      Soak the dried cannellini beans in water for 24 hours to help them to sprout faster.

      Choose an area that receives full to partial sun and prepare the ground. Use a shovel to break up the dirt to a depth of four to five inches. Remove large rocks, sticks and other debris. Consider mixing in a soil amendment, such as compost or a commercially-prepared vegetable garden fertilizer. If using compost, cover the planting area with approximately four inches of compost and mix it into the dirt thoroughly. If using a commercial fertilizer, follow the manufacturer's directions.

      Sow the cannellini beans. Sink each bean one inch deep and cover with soil, tapping down gently. Space the plants approximately three to four inches apart. If planting several rows of cannellini bean plants, space the rows three feet apart. Water lightly to avoid splashing away the dirt that is covering the sown beans. The beans will sprout within four to five days.

Tips & Warnings

  • Store dry cannellini beans in a sealed ceramic or glass container. Soak cannellini beans overnight before cooking. A cup of dried cannellini beans will make three cups of cooked cannellini beans.

  • Cannellinis are bush bean plants. Runner cannellini beans are not true cannellini beans but simply white runner beans.
