How to Make Hanami-Style Jewelry

Hanami literally means "flower viewing." It is a traditional Japanese custom that refers to the appreciation of the beauty of flowers. The flowers most often revered in Japan for their beauty are cherry blossoms or ume blossoms. Hanami-style jewelry is simply jewelry made in the Japanese Hanami-style. Hanami jewelry includes pieces such as bob earrings engraved with cherry blossoms and necklaces covered with ume blossom sketchings. With Hanami-style cherry blossom beads, you can make your own Hanami-style jewelry.

  • Hanami-style beads Beading wire Wire nippers Jewelry clasp Crimping pliers

    How to Make Hanami-Style Jewelry

  1. Step 1

    Procure Hanami-style beads. Any beads that contain cherry blossom, ume blossoms or any other flowery designs can be considered Hanami-style.

  2. Step 2

    Wrap a strand of beading wire around either your neck or wrist to measure how long the wire should be. Cut the wire at the determined length with the wire nippers.

  3. Step 3

    Slip the ring of the jewelry clasp onto one end of the wire. Thread a loop through the ring with the wire by pushing the wire through the ring twice. Crimp the wire to the ring of the clasp using the crimping

  4. Step 4

    Bead the Hanami-style beads onto the beading wire.

  5. Step 5

    Finish the bracelet or necklace by threaded a loop through the clasp of jewelry clasp by pushing the wire through the clasp two times. Crimp the wire to the clasp using the crimping pliers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add charms, gemstones and other decorative pieces to your Hanami-style necklace or bracelet for more personalization.
  • Make sure you crimp the wire to the jewelry clasp. Otherwise, you beaded jewelry might break apart.
