How to Make Hard Bread Dough

Hard bread, also called "hard dough bread" and "hard do bread" is a bread that is common in Jamaica and . It is sweeter than most breads because it contains more sugar. Hard dough bread is a good bread for making sandwiches because of the density. But it is still a very moist bread. Some consider it similar in flavor and texture to sourdough bread. This bread is commonly baked in a rectangular pan and has a sandwich bread shape. The recipe below yields 18-24 servings.

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/4 cup and 1 teaspoon white sugar 1-1/2 packages active dry yeast 1 cup and 2 tablespoons warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C) 1 tablespoon and 1-1/2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1 tablespoon and 1-1/2 teaspoons butter, melted 3/4 teaspoon salt 4 cups and 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour Bread pan 12x5 inches 1 small bowl 1 large bowl 1 damp cloth Cooling rack

    How to Make Hard Bread Dough

  1. Step 1

    Mix sugar, yeast, and warm water in small bowl. Mix until dissolved and let stand for 10 minutes.

  2. Step 2

    Mix yeast mixture, 1/2 of the flour, salt, oil, and butter in the large bowl. Continually mix in the additional flour until well mixed, and it has formed a ball.

  3. Step 3

    Knead dough for 5-9 minutes on lightly floured surface.

  4. Step 4

    Place dough back in large bowl. Cover with damp cloth and let rise for 1.5 hours. It should be doubled in size.

  5. Step 5

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  6. Step 6

    Bake in oven for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and let me stand for 5 minutes.

  7. Step 7

    Turn bread over on cooling rack and let cool for 1-3 hours until cooled completely.

  • Serve hard bread dough with jam or butter for best flavor
