RuneScape is a flash-based massively multiple-player online game that is played through your web browser. You create a character to journey though a world of adventure with thousands of other players around the world. Basic accounts are free and there is no client to download, so you could play RuneScape on any computer with minimal installation. RuneScape uses ActiveX, a set of software components developed by Microsoft and frequently used in Java-based programs.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Java active on your computer
  1. Step 1

Visit www.RuneScape.com. RuneScape is played from your browser, so it does not have to be installed. If you are visiting the website for the first time, there will be a welcome screen for RuneScape. You can toggle an option to "Do Not Display this Page Again" in the upper-right part of the page.

  2. Step 2

Click "Continue to Full Site for News and Game Help" to continue to the launch page.

  3. Step 3

Click the button labeled "Free Users Click Here To Play." You do not have to be a full member of RuneScape to install ActiveX.

  4. Step 4

Click "Run" to install ActiveX. ActiveX does not require you to restart your browser.

  5. Step 5

Wait for RuneScape to load. If an error occurred while installing ActiveX, RuneScape will not start. Revisit RuneScape and attempt to install ActiveX again. If there is still an issue, try updating your browser or switching to a different one. If everything goes well, log into your account to begin playing RuneScape.

Tips & Warnings
  • RuneScape has multiple subscription options, including a free account. ActiveX is a popular component for Adobe Flash, so it is useful beyond RuneScape. You do not need to create an account before installing ActiveX.
  • While installing ActiveX through RuneScape.com is safe, other websites might try to trick you into installing malicious software under the guise of ActiveX.
