How to Cook Cube Steak and Gravy

  1. Step 1

Place an empty frying pan on the stove on medium heat. While it warms up, spread a piece of wax paper on the table or counter and pour 1/4 cup of flour onto the paper. Add the cube steak to the flour and coat all pieces thoroughly.

  2. Step 2

Add 2 tbsp. of cooking oil to the hot pan. Tilt the pan to work the oil around so that the entire bottom of the pan has been coated. Add the cube steak to the pan and season to taste with salt and pepper. Fry until the steak has been browned on all sides. Remove from pan and set aside.

  3. Step 3

Slowly add the milk, water and 1/4 cup of flour to the pan. Reduce the heat to low and stir continuously until the mixture begins to thicken. It may take several minutes but as the mixture heats it will start to become thicker and take on the consistency of creamy gravy.

  4. Step 4

Add the cube steak back to the frying pan. Mix the browned cube steak so that all pieces are saturated by gravy. Cover and continue cooking on low heat for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Tips & Warnings
  • Almost any side dish goes great with cube steak and gravy. Green beans, peas, carrots, corn and mashed potatoes are all traditional favorites. Try adding a side order of fries to a child's portion and see how popular it becomes.
