Step 1
Baby Furniture SafetyGo to the Consumer Product Safety Commission website.
-
Step 2
Click on "Recalls and Product Safety News", under the Consumer Safety tab.
-
Step 3
Baby Furniture SafetyChoose "Company". It is easiest to search by company name, if you know it.
-
Step 4
Baby Furniture SafetyChoose company name from the list. Just scroll down until you see the company name you want. I'll use Child Craft, for illustration purposes. Scroll down until you see "Child Craft". Click on "Child Craft" Now click on FIND.
-
Step 5
Baby Furniture SafetyLocate the recall. Three show up in this search. Let's say we are going to sell a baby crib by Child Craft. We purchased it in 2005. That means that the recall for 2004 might not affect us, but you could look at it later just to be safe. Ignore the changing table recall. For now, we will look at the recall on the top, "Recall of cribs for October 2005". Click on that.
-
Step 6
Read the Hazard Description. It describes problem with an end piece that can become loose and entrap or injure child.
-
Step 7
Read the Product Description very carefully. It lists the model numbers affected by the recall, and tells you where they are located. If your crib doesn't have these model numbers, it is safe to sell. If it DOES have any of these model numbers, DON'T SELL IT.
-
Step 8
Read the Remedy section. There, it tells you not to use the crib, but it also tells you to contact the company and gives you the phone number. Child Craft will send you a FREE replacement part. So, all you have to do is order the part, replace it, and then you can put it in your garage sale, free of any liability.
-
Step 9
Baby Furniture SafetyThrow out any baby furniture that is unsafe to use, and doesn't have a fix to the problem, or no new product is offered by the company.
