How to Write Formula to X in Microsoft Excel

How to Write Formula to X in Microsoft Excel thumbnail
Step 1

One of the features of Excel is the ability to calculate math formulas. For instance, you can raise an equation to a power of a certain number, such as 2 * 3 to the power of 3. In this example we will use an Excel formula to add 3 to the value in cell B1 (2 in this example), then square the result.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Excel
Show More

Instructions

    • 1
      Step 1

Click in the Excel cell where you want the answer to appear, which is A1 in this example.

    • 2
      Step 2

Click in Formula Bar (fx field) located above the cells and enter the equal sign "=".

    • 3
      Step 3

Type an open parenthesis, the equation you want to raise to a power, then a closed parenthesis. For this example, we would enter the following: (3 + B1). This part of the formula adds the value in B1 and 3.

    • 4
      Step 4

Enter the caret symbol "^" into the Formula field.

    • 5
      Step 5

Enter the number you wish to raise the equation to. (Or, if applicable, click in the cell containing the value or enter the cell number.) In this example we are squaring the result of the formula, so we would enter "2".

    • 6
      Step 6

Hit Enter. The answer (25) will populate in the cell selected in Step 1.

Tips & Warnings

  • Alternatively, instead of using the caret symbol, POWER(x,y) can be used. For this example, type "=POWER((3+B1),2)" (without the quotation marks) into the Formula field and hit Enter.
