A tie-dye shirt is dyed with several bright colors. Every homemade tie-dye shirt is unique because the dye spreads out as you add it to the shirt. You can also crinkle the shirt to make a new tie-dye pattern. This is an excellent activity to do with your children, who will proudly wear the colorful results of their creativity.

How to Crinkle Tie Dye a Shirt

  1. Step 1

Lay out an old plastic tablecloth so you don't stain your table. You can purchase some at the dollar store for one dollar.

  2. Step 2

If your kit doesn't include plastic gloves, buy a pair so your fingers will look like a rainbow for a month or so.

  3. Step 3

Pour the dye into the plastic bottles, pour in water to the bottle's fill line, then shake the bottle.

  4. Step 4

Crinkle your shirt any way that you want to. You can roll it up or bunch it at the top or bottom. Be creative. Use rubber bands to hold your crinkle in place. You can create different tie dye patterns by crinkling the shirt at different places/

  5. Step 5

Begin squeezing the dye over the shirt. You can place the different colors wherever you want them. You can even overlap the colors if you want. Flip the shirt over and squeeze dye there. You can leave some spots white or you can color the entire shirt.

  6. Step 6

Wrap the shirt completely in plastic wrap and set it aside for six hours.

  7. Step 7

Unwrap the shirt and take a look at your creation.

Tips & Warnings
  • One kit should make three shirts.
  • Wash the tie-dye shirt at least three times before wearing it. The dye will run out and stain the other articles if washed at the same time, so wash the tie-dye shirt by itself. You can wash it in a bucket with a spoonful of detergent until the dye stops running.
