A system restore disk is not only a smart backup tool to create, but also a must have for "just in case" situations when your system crashes, a virus infects the hard drive or you accidentally erase the hard drive. Making a system restore disk is done easily through the Windows XP Backup Utility program. This restore disk can be completed in a matter minutes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools," then "Backup."

  2. Step 2

Click "Advanced Mode" -- this option is in the center of the "Backup or Restore Wizard" box.

  3. Step 3

Click on the icon by "Automated System Recovery Wizard." Then click "Next" on the "Automated System Recovery Preparation Wizard" box.

  4. Step 4

Insert a compact disk into your writable CD drive. Make sure the compact disc is recordable and ready for saving the backup.

  5. Step 5

Click "Browse" on the "Backup Destination" screen. Double-click on the CD Drive to which you want to save the backup. Enter a name for your backup---like "Backup" or "Backup XX-XX-XX" where "XX" is the date of your backup.

  6. Step 6

Click "Next" after you have entered the name for your backup and you have been returned to the wizard box. Then click "Finish." The backup program will start running and your system restore disk will be created.

Tips & Warnings
  • Multiple compact disk may be needed. Have your disc ready before starting the Automated System Recovery Wizard. Store the system restore disk(s) in a safe place or in a off location if possible.
  • Close all running programs before creating your system restore disk.
