One of the most common problems is an operating system locking up or freezing. In general, these problems are caused due to spyware or malware. In such an instance, just simply run a virus scan and check for viruses. Remove the viruses, if any. If your system doesn't have antivirus software, install a program immediately. Similarly, when you download files from the Internet or from your e-mail, scan them first before using them. This will help you avoid viruses or spyware being installed into the operating system. A system may even lock up if the drivers are either corrupted or not installed properly. Removing and reinstalling drivers may also solve the problem. You may also try increasing virtual memory if the system constantly freezes up.

Another major issue is the 'blue screen of death,' or a system rebooting automatically. This is most likely due to improper installation of drivers or software. Try reinstalling drivers. You may also try uninstalling the software you may have installed more recently as the software may not be compatible with the system. If nothing solves the problem, reinstalling Windows is the only option available.

Is your system running slowly? There are various reasons for this problem. A majority of the time it is due to lack of memory. Check whether you have enough free space in your hard drive. If there are lots of data in the hard drive occupying space, try backing up important data externally to free up space. You may also run Disk Defragmenter to compress the data. Corrupted registry can also be the cause. Therefore, clean the computer registry. If there are unwanted programs in the system, find and uninstall them. Do a regular cleanup of the system at least once every three to four months.

Hearing an unfamiliar or strange noise is yet another common problem with computers. This is purely a hardware problem. Check if the fan is properly set and working correctly. If not, try replacing the fan. If there is a loose wire connection, fix it immediately. If there is a major hardware issue, it is always advisable to seek the expertise of a professional computer technician.

Tips & Warnings
Run a virus scan every week. Most of the antivirus software allows you to schedule virus checks. You just have to set them to scan every week. Remember that the system has to be switched on if the virus check is to run as scheduled. Regularly clean the system by way of uninstalling unnecessary programs, running Disk Defragmenter and disk cleanup.
Don't ever install pirated software as they might contain spyware or malware. This may hamper the performance of the system.
