Foundation creates a smooth base for your makeup application. When done correctly, it can give the illusion of flawless skin. Make sure your foundation matches your skin tone and blends into your jawline so that it's unnoticeable. Following these steps will help you apply foundation like a pro.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Foundation Cosmetic sponges

How to Put on Makeup Foundation

  1. Step 1

Begin with a freshly cleansed and moisturized face. You should also apply sunscreen before applying foundation.

  2. Step 2

Dot liquid foundation on your forehead, both cheeks, nose and chin. Your fingers should be clean.

  3. Step 3

Using your fingers or a clean cosmetic sponge, blend the foundation outward, making sure it reaches all the edges of your face. Your sponge can be dry, but if you want extra sheer coverage, wet it and squeeze out the extra water before using.

  4. Step 4

If you're using a cake foundation, dip a clean cosmetic sponge into it and apply to your forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. As with liquid foundation, make sure you blend it in, using the sponge or clean fingers.

  5. Step 5

For stick foundations, dot it in the same areas (forehead, cheeks, nose and chin) and blend with fingers or a sponge.

  6. Step 6

Blending is key for a flawless finish, so take your time with this step. Foundation needs to reach your hairline and right beneath your jawline, creating a seamless line between your face and your neck.

Tips & Warnings
  • Liquid foundation is the lightest formula and is good for women with minimal skin problems or young women. Cake or stick foundation is thicker and provides maximum coverage. Choose brands that are non-comedogenic so that they don't clog pores. If you try on foundation at a department store counter, look at your face in a mirror near a window or step outside in natural light to make sure the color matches your complexion exactly.
  • Try not to buy foundation without testing it first unless you know your exact brand and color. This can be more difficult when buying from drugstores, where you can't try before you buy. Don't wear foundation that's too light or too dark for you. It will be very obvious.
