Cake decorating can be an enjoyable hobby. Perhaps you have taken classes and earned certifications from a professional cake decorating teacher. As you develop your skills and realize that your work is appreciated by others you may consider decorating cakes to make money. There are several ways you can make money decorating cakes. Consider working for others or starting your own business.
Contact a local grocer that has a bakery service and fill out a cake decorator job application. Grocery stores hire cake decorators to keep their products professionally decorated.
Contact a local bakery and inquire if the business is hiring cake decorators or assistants. If you are serious about making money as a decorator you will be willing to start at a ground-level job such as an apprentice and work your way up at a lucrative bakery.
Take photos of your work to show to a potential employer. It is important to be able to show your level of expertise and experience.
Sell your skills. Be daring, take a tray of your own cupcakes, each decorated differently. If you are sure of yourself, show it.
Give the business owner a reason to hire you. Offer to teach classes to children while Mom or Dad are shopping. Show that potential new employer that you are innovative and can bring in more business.
Set up a business plan. What kind of cake decorating business will you have? For example, do you plan to hire yourself out to businesses, caterers and bakeries when they are shorthanded? Will you have your own, in-home service?
Inquire at the municipal and state level to learn what licenses you must have to work with and sell food out of your home. Some areas are designated residential only. Will you rent business space?
Check to see what equipment you must have for your business if you are required to have a licensed kitchen. Some states and municipalities require a separate kitchen for food products for public consumption and all stainless steel dishes and utensils.
Decide what your business name will be. Have business cards made up to present to potential clients.
