Aviane is a birth control pill that works by preventing ovulation. Aviane also causes changes in a woman's uterine lining and cervical mucus that make it difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and fertilize an egg. This medication contains hormones that may increase the risk of blood clots, heart attack and stroke especially when used by women over 35 years of age or by women who smoke. Talk to your doctor about your risks before deciding to take Aviane.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take the first Aviane pill on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday after your period starts. Make sure to talk to your doctor about exact usage instructions.

  2. Step 2

Take one Aviane pill at the same time everyday, about 24 hours apart. A regular pack contains enough pills for 28 days, including seven "reminder" pills that should be taken when your period starts. The reminder pills are there to help keep you on your regular cycle.

  3. Step 3

Use another form of contraception, like condoms, when you first begin using Aviane.

  4. Step 4

Start a new pack the day after your original pack runs out.

  5. Step 5

Schedule regular visits with your doctor (every one or two months) while using Aviane.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use exactly as directed by your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant or if you have missed two periods in a row. Wait at least four to six weeks before using Aviane if you have recently had a baby. If you miss a dose, take two pills the next day then resume your normal schedule. If you miss two pills in a row, take two pills for two days before resuming your normal schedule. If you miss three pills or more in a row, throw out your pack and start over with a new pack.
  • Do not smoke while using Aviane. Do not use Aviane if you are pregnant or have recently given birth. Do not use Aviane if you have a history of blood clots or heart disease. Risk of heart attack and blood clots increases if you are over 35. Do not use this pill if you have liver disease, high blood pressure, breast or uterine cancer, or abnormal vaginal bleeding. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these side effects: weakness anywhere on the body, numbness, sudden headache, jaundice, swelling of the hands, feet and ankles, chest pain, depression, stomach pain, nausea, pain in the eyes or problems with your vision.
