Instructions

  1. How to Raise Racing Pigeons

    • 1

Provide housing for the pigeons. This needs to be a solid structure that gets plenty of ventilation. A small shed with windows is perfect, but the windows must caged with wire so the birds cannot fly away. Be sure the loft is not covered by trees as it needs to be visible from the sky.

    • 2

Put the pigeons in a carrying case for at least one per day for their six months of life. The birds need to feel comfortable in the case because they will eventually be in it for long periods of time.

    • 3

Drive the pigeons a half mile away from their home after they are six months old. Set the pigeons free and return home. The birds should return shortly after you. Reward them with food to show encouragement.

    • 4

Take them one mile away from home on the next trip. Set them free, return home and wait for their arrival. Continue taking them one mile further with each trip. Let one bird out at a time, rather than in groups, when you get to the 10-mile point.

    • 5

Increase the distance by five or 10 miles per trip once you get to the 10-mile mark. Pigeons can race up to 600 miles, so the final distance is up to you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean the pigeon loft regularly. Provide a bird bath so they can bathe themselves. Feed the pigeons two times per day.
