How to Tie a Stopper Knot

A stopper knot is one of the easiest knots to tie. Sailors used it to add weight to the end of a rope that needed to be thrown. Although knot tying has become a fading craft, there are still knot tieing enthusiasts who tie knots as a hobby.

Things You'll Need:

• Rope

1. 
    

   To tie stopper knot, leave a long working end, this called the standing end. Hold the rope in one hand. Wrap the rope around fingers to make round turn for the stopper knot.

2. 
    

   Continue to wrap rope around fingers and standing end for the stopper knot.

3. 
    

   Make at least five turns around the fingers and standing part of rope for the stopper knot.

4. 
    

   Remove the stopper knot from the fingers, and slip it over a thumb. Tuck the working end inside the turns, then pull it through. Pull the knot tight. Work the knot until the turns lie neatly side by side on the finished knot.

Tips & Warnings

• When the stopper knot is finished, It should have a square look to it as pictured in step 3. Due to the softness of the rope used in the illustrations, it has more of a cone appearance.
