Home pregnancy tests detect a hormone that is created by your body when you are pregnant. Each day you are pregnant the amount of hormone that is present within your body increases. When you use a home pregnancy test, you are testing your urine for the presence of the pregnancy hormone. It is important to follow the home pregnancy test steps in order to get the most accurate results.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • home pregnancy test
  • urine
  1. Step 1

Buy a home pregnancy test over-the-counter at any drugstore, box store that sells feminine hygiene products, or online. Buy at least two home pregnancy tests, so you can take the test twice to verify the results.

  2. Step 2

Take the home pregnancy test when you think you have missed your period, or as early as five days before you are supposed to start your period. The earlier you take the test the less likely the results are going to be accurate. Most home pregnancy tests are 99% accurate if you wait to take them the first day of your missed period.

  3. Step 3

Use the home pregnancy test during your first urination in the morning for the most accurate results. Most tests work by detecting the amount of the pregnancy hormone in your urine, which becomes very concentrated during the night when you are not peeing frequently.

  4. Step 4

Read the home pregnancy test instructions all the way through, so you complete each step accurately.

  5. Step 5

Pee on the home pregnancy test stick or in a cup as recommended by the instructions.

  6. Step 6

Watch the window on the test stick. After about a minute you should be able to see the results of the test. Typically, a plus symbol, line, or specific word, will become visible if you are pregnant. Even a faint line means a positive pregnancy test. After several minutes the pregnancy test is no longer valid, so check the results within the first few minutes.

  7. Step 7

Repeat the test to verify the results. If the results are negative, but you think you are pregnant, wait until the next morning and try another test.

  8. Step 8

Call your doctor if you are pregnant and schedule and appointment. Your doctor will use a blood test that detects the pregnancy hormone, and is more accurate than a home pregnancy test.
