How to Find an Illinois Corporation's Registered Agent

Many states have easy-to-use websites through which anyone can look up the registered agent for corporations and limited liability companies registered in that state. Illinois is no exception. Use the Illinois Secretary of State's website to do such a search, which might be useful in advance of serving a business with a legal document such as a complaint, summons or subpoena.

      Go to http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com -- the website of the Illinois Secretary of State, which contains a wide range of information in addition to business-related filings.

      Click on Business Services/UCC Online Filings in the left column.

      Click on Corporate/LLC Search/Certificate of Good Standing.

      Click on Search the Real Time Corporate/LLC Database/Certificate of Good Standing.

      Select the corporate structure (if known), choose a search method (by name, keyword, partial word or file number), enter search terms, and click "Submit."

      Click on the Corporation/LLC Name in the list of search results.

      View the Corporation File Detail Report, which includes the name and address of the corporation's or LLC's registered agent. The Corporation File Detail Report provides other useful information as well, such as the name and address of the president, the incorporation date, and more.

  • Registered agents are the individuals who a company designates to receive service of process when a business is involved in a lawsuit.
