When the cells in our body use oxygen, they produce by-products called Free Radicals. Antioxidants, which are nutrients in our food that help to slow down or prevent oxidative damage in our bodies, go after the free radicals to help prevent or fix the damage they caused. Such health issues as diabetes, immune system, cancer, heart disease and macular degeneration can all benefit from eating more antioxidants.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Start your day with a delicious breakfast full of antioxidants. Have a bowl of oatmeal and include a dose of Vitamin C with a serving of fruits like strawberries, oranges, grapefruits, and blueberries. Wash it down with a big mug of tea.

  2. Step 2

Enjoy a salad with dark greens like spinach, kale or broccoli for lunch. Garnish it with nuts and seeds. If you'd like a heartier meal, add some chicken slices to it. Cranberry, pomegranate or tomato juice would be a free-radical-fighting beverage to accompany the meal.

  3. Step 3

Finish it off right. Dinner will be your last chance to end the day with a meal full of antioxidants. Prepare fish or red meat, have vegetables like carrots, squash, sweet potatoes or collards as a side dish, and drink it down with a nice glass of red wine. If you'd like a dessert, dark chocolate will be a sweet treat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't overdo the wine and dark chocolate--drink and eat in moderation.
  • Find ways to incorportate extra fruits and vegetables into all of your meals.
  • Cigarette smoke is a major source of free-radicals. Avoid it!
