There are many charities who welcome hand-knitted items from donors. In most cases, knitters identify a charitable organization first before they find patterns and projects to knit to donate to charity. This allows a knitter a chance to focus on specific recipients—their likes and dislikes, colors and styles as well as types of yarn required to knit for a particular charity. Once you have selected a charity, there are several ways to locate free knitting projects that will meet its specific requirements. Here are a few of the easiest and most common ones.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask the charity for specific requirements for yarn, size, colors and other necessities. For example, to knit to donate a helmet liner for our troops, there are specific requirements for the type of yarn, colors and how the liner is to be knitted. In some cases, charitable organizations who accept hand-knitted items may even have a few free knitting patterns you can request or download.

  2. Step 2

Search online for free charity knitting patterns. Most of the large yarn manufacturers like Lionbrand Yarns and Yarn Market offer free charity knitting projects and patterns on their websites.

  3. Step 3

Look around your local hobby or craft store for knitting leaflets and patterns to knit to donate to charity. Browse through the knitting section and look for free pattern leaflets that are being offered if you purchase a specific yarn.

  4. Step 4

Read yarn labels to see if a pattern is printed on the inside. This is another convenient way of finding free charity knitting projects. Many times, yarn manufacturers will feature a free knitting pattern when introducing a new yarn or color upgrade of one of their most popular yarns.

  5. Step 5

Design your own knitting pattern. Use the basic knit and purl stitches to create unique and interesting patterns to knit items to donate to charity. This is especially easy when making dish cloths, blankets, pot holders or various knitting projects for charity fundraiser events.
