Bridesmaids dresses don't have to match!

Many brides are breaking away from the tradition of having all of their bridesmaids dress the same. There are several benefits to this route -bridesmaids will spend money on a dress that they are more likely to use again, your bridal party will be eclectic both live and in photos, and the bride and bridesmaids can get really creative with colors and styles. Use these steps to set the parameters for your bridesmaids dresses.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Figure out the style you want for your bridesmaids dresses. You can get specific, or just give your bridesmaids a few criteria to follow. For example: tell them you want just above the knee length dresses with tank style bodices. Having everyone similar in style will show uniformity but still allow your bridesmaids to be unique.

  2. Step 2

Figure out colors. You can have a lot of fun with this. Remember each bridesmaid doesn't have to necessarily be a different color. You could have two light blue and two sage green, for example. You could also have various shades of the same color. If it makes sense for your color scheme, you can even let bridesmaids pick their own color. Just make sure you communicate with them and give them some ideas on hues and shades.

  3. Step 3

Tie it together with accessories. This will be the easiest way to create continuity with your bridesmaids dresses. Have everyone wear silver shoes, or buy your bridesmaids matching jewelry sets. Your bridesmaids' matched accessories will also help identify your bridal party.

  4. Step 4

Communicate with your bridesmaids on their dress selections. Get them to send you picture messages while they're shopping, or better yet, go on a shopping excursion with them to help find their bridesmaid dress. Although your bridesmaids will be pleased that they don't have to buy a $200 dress and look the same as your other ones, they may have some nervousness about making sure they get something that will look good with the rest of the bridal party. So, let them know what your expectations are and have fun picking out something unique for each bridesmaid.

Tips & Warnings
  • Let your maid of honor stand out a little more with a larger bouquet, or slightly larger jewelry pieces.
