How to Garnishee Funds in Bank Accounts

Creditors can legally freeze bank accounts in order to collect money owed. There are some limitations on which funds can be seized. Government benefits, retirement funds, workers' compensation, life insurance payments, disability aid and alimony are some of the funds that are exempt from being seized. Money in bank accounts in the debtor's name and the debtor's name along with a spouse can be legally garnisheed. The debtor must have more than $2,500 in the account to be eligible for seizure.
