How to Use Essential Oils in Soap
Essential oils, also known as volatile or ethereal oils, are concentrated liquids that contain plant aroma compounds. Essential oils are generally used to scent perfumes, cosmetics, bath products and candles. Essential oils are also used in aromatherapy, an alternative medicine where the scent of specific plants and herbs is believed to help cure various diseases and ailments. Although aromatherapy is not FDA-approved, you can get relaxation benefits from breathing some scents in the shower, such as lavender and sage. You can make your own lavender and sage soap at home with a trip to the craft store for supplies, and a few items from around the house. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Knife Melt-and-pour soap base Microwave Microwave-safe bowl Wooden spoon Square plastic leftovers container Lavender essential oil Sage essential oil

Cut a block of melt-and-pour soap base into one-inch blocks with a knife. Place the blocks into a bowl and place in the microwave.

Heat the melt-and-pour soap base, which you can purchase at your local craft store or online (see Resources). Place your microwave power on 50%, or medium, and heat for approximately 60 seconds, until the soap is completely melted. Stir the soap with a wooden spoon until it is smooth.

Add three drops of lavender and three drops of sage essential oil to the melted soap and stir thoroughly. You can purchase essential oils at your local health food store.

Pour the soap into a square leftovers container. Allow to cool, approximately one hour.

When the soap has cooled, press on the bottom of the plastic container to release the soap. Cut the soap into smaller squares or rectangles, if desired.

Tips & Warnings
Use any essential oil you desire to create different scented soaps.
If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in melt-and-pour soap, do not use on your skin.
