How to Install DVD Firmware

The term "firmware" refers to the small program that controls basic functions of a hardware device, such as a computer's DVD drive. Without it, the device will not operate. There may be a need to update or re-install a device's firmware should the manufacturer fix bugs in previous versions or add to the device's features.

Tips & Warnings

  • Firmware is usually a binary file (.bin) that has to be flashed using a utility provided by the manufacturer, but many manufacturers have compiled small programs to flash the drive easily. If your firmware is not located by the CdrInfo web site, try running a search via your favorite search engine using the manufacturer name, the model number of the DVD player and the word "firmware."

  • It is potentially dangerous to your DVD drive and its functionality to flash your DVD drive with firmware that is not approved by the manufacturer.
