How to Use Inulin

Inulin, not to be confused with insulin, is a type of dietary fiber available as a nutritional supplement. Most manufacturers will derive the inulin from chicory root. Inulin is recommended as a way to support the digestive system. Benefits claimed by manufacturers include good colon health and the regulation of healthy bacteria found in the intestines.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase inulin from a dietary supplement retailer. You can find several online stores that sell inulin, including iHerb. Supplement brand names include NOW Foods and Jarrow Formulas.

    • 2

Measure out one teaspoon of inulin powder. Since it is a soluble fiber, inulin is available in powder form in lieu of capsules. Mix the teaspoon of the inulin powder into a beverage and consume. Most people will combine the inulin with a fruit shake, water, juice or protein smoothie.

    • 3

Use the inulin once a day as a dietary supplement. You can take your dose of inulin each morning at breakfast. Some manufacturers recommend that you use inulin twice a day, but it's your preference.

    • 4

Stop taking inulin if you develop any side effects from the product. Few side effects have been reported, but some individuals have experienced stomach upset from the product. Contact your doctor if you have diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or abdominal cramping after consuming inulin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep in mind that none of the claims made by producers of inulin have been evaluated by the FDA. It is important to talk to your doctor before starting a nutritional supplement to discuss side effects and potential drug interactions. Inulin is often combined with FructoOligoSaccharides in dietary supplements. This is another type of soluble fiber.
