How to Install an AEM Intake

The factory air cleaning system on most production vehicles is designed to minimize costs. In many instances, an emphasis is placed on minimizing noise and increasing fuel efficiency. However, there are always trade-offs. You may be able to achieve decent fuel economy and more power, but sacrifice noise level. Or, you may be able to achieve acceptable noise level during operation but sacrifice fuel efficiency and power. If you are not concerned about increased noise level, an AEM intake will allow you to replace the factory air cleaning unit with a unit that has improved air flow. This, in turn, will increase fuel economy and horsepower.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the air cleaner cover. This may be held on with clips that can be removed manually or you may need to use a screwdriver to remove retaining screws.

    • 2

Remove the air filter element. This will pull straight out of the air cleaner assembly. It is not held in place with anything.

    • 3

Detach all of the hoses from the air intake tubing. Normally, this will require you to loosen screws on hose clamps and pull the hoses off.

    • 4

Remove the mounting fasteners and mounting brackets that hold the factory air box in place with a socket wrench.

    • 5

Loosen the nut on the hose clamp holding the intake tubing to the throttle body.

    • 6

Slide the hose clamp off the hose and pull the intake tubing off the throttle body.

    • 7

Slide the AEM intake tubing over the throttle body. The rubber neck of the intake tubing will slide over the throttle body in the same manner as the factory tubing.

    • 8

Slide the hose clamp over the end of the rubber neck on the intake tubing and tighten the hose clamp using the screwdriver.

    • 9

Bolt the new mounting bracket where the factory mounting bracket used to be.

    • 10

Reconnect all the hoses. There will be identical fittings on the AEM intake that correspond to the factory hose fittings. Re-tighten the hose clamps (if any) on the hoses.

    • 11

Slide the rubber neck of the air filter over the other end of the AEM intake tubing. Make sure that you have the hose clamp loosely fitted over the end of the rubber neck of the filter.

    • 12

Tighten the hose clamp with the screwdriver, sealing the air filter to the intake tubing.
