How to Replace Leaky Fuel Injectors
Fuel injectors are responsible for providing fuel to the engine. The injectors are essentially comprised of just a nozzle and a valve that allows more or less fuel to enter the combustion chamber, depending on the size of the injector. Over time, the O-ring seals on the injectors may wear and start to leak fuel. If this happens, you'll need to know how to replace leaky fuel injectors.
Things You'll Need
- Socket wrench with socket set Flat tip screwdriver Open-end wrench Fresh engine oil
Instructions

1
Locate the fuel pump fuse in the fuse box under the dash. Pull the fuse for the fuel pump.
-
2
Start the vehicle and let it run until it stalls. The fuel system is now depressurized.
-
-
3
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. To do this, turn the retaining nut on the cable clamp counterclockwise until the clamp loosens enough for you to remove the clamp.
-
4
Remove the air cleaner assembly. This includes the air box and intake tubing. In most vehicles, the entire assembly is held in place with several bolts and a hose clamp located at the throttle body assembly.
-
5
Unplug the fuel injector connectors. To do this, use a flat tip screwdriver to pry the spring clip loose. Then, pull the connector off the injector.
-
6
Detach the vacuum hose as well as the fuel return hose from the fuel pressure regulator.
-
7
Remove the bolts holding the two ground cables to the intake manifold (or frame of the vehicle).
-
8
Detach the fuel line from the fuel rail. Use an open-end wrench to turn the tube nut counterclockwise; or, if your fuel line is connected with a hose clamp, use the screwdriver to remove the hose clamp by turning the retaining screw counterclockwise, and then pull the hose off.
-
9
Remove the fuel rail mounting nuts and pull the fuel rail and injectors off.
-
10
Remove the set plate screws (if applicable on your vehicle) and then remove the injector(s) from the fuel rail. Make sure you remove the O-ring and cushion ring seals and replace them, as this is likely what is causing the fuel injectors to leak.
-
11
Coat the new O-ring and cushion ring seals with fresh engine oil and slide them onto the injector(s).
-
12
Reinstall the fuel injectors. Make sure that you line up the center-line of the electrical connector with the corresponding mark on the intake manifold. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal.
