How to Use IrfanView to Edit Pictures

One of the more tedious tasks faced by a webmaster or someone who works with a large number of photos is making edits to a large number of photos at one time. It can be a time-consuming task to open each file, make the changes, save the file and then, move on to the next file. IrfanView, a free software program, is designed to make basic edits to multiple files all at once. It's a great time-saver and an efficient way to resize, rotate, rename, crop, convert colors and make basic enhancements to a whole group of photos at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install IrfanView Software. The software is only for Windows-based machines and will not work on any Mac OS.

    • 2

Start IrfanView. Go to "File > Batch Conversion/Rename." In most cases, you will want to use the "Batch conversion - Rename results files" option. This will prevent you from making irreversible changes to your source files if you make a mistake.

    • 3

Choose the folder and photos you'd like to modify. Click the "Use current ('look in') directory" to have your new files output to the same folder as the current source folder. You can select as many photos as you'd like, and you can choose the pattern that will be used to rename the files.

    • 4

Click on the "Use advanced options" check box to enable a large number of additional batch editing options. To see all of these options, click the now enabled "Advanced" button.

    • 5

Select any (or all) of the advanced options you'd like. Advanced options include adding overlay text to all batch photos, resizing, rotating, color and contrast changes, as well as cropping and color conversions. When you've selected all of the options you'd like, click "OK" and then, verify that everything on the main batch screen is correct. When finished, click "Start Batch" and all of the photos you've chosen will be transformed according to the selections you've made.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice using the software on smaller batches until you get used to all of the features. A batch runs pretty quickly, and you may find that you don't like some of your results or that you've made an error to your selections and need to try the batch again. The IrfanView software has tools for creating CDs and slideshows of your photos and a number of other handy tools. If you find this a useful program, consider making a donation to the creator of the program.

  • Editing files in a batch process can be very efficient, but it can lead to unintentional problems that cannot be undone. Always keep a backup of your original files so that you don't make an irreparable change to your source files.
