How to Make a Hair Scrunchy

Making your own hair scrunchy is a fun and easy project that can be completed in under an hour. You can create scrunchies of all colors and fabric types to match every outfit in your wardrobe. Fabric stores offer hundreds of yards of material to choose from, including children's designs, sports team logos and holiday prints. It only takes a small amount of material to make a scrunchy, so you can purchase remnant bundles at big discounts and have plenty of material left over for multiple scrunchies. Scrunchies also make great gifts and fun craft projects for the whole family.

Things You'll Need

• 6-by-12-inch strip of material
• 5- or 6-inch piece of 5/8-inch-wide elastic
• Sewing machine or a needle with thread to match your material
• Straight pins
• Iron

Instructions

1. 

   Fold the strip of material in half lengthwise, and sew the wrong sides together on the long side only. Do not sew the ends.

2. 

   Turn the tube of fabric right side out. Iron or smooth it by hand, so the seam is centered on one side of the scrunchy.

3. 

   Insert the 5-inch piece of elastic into the tube of fabric, and bunch the fabric as needed to expose the elastic on both ends of the tube. Stretch the elastic to grasp it at both ends. Sew the elastic together with a strong stitch.

4. 

   Fold over the fabric's raw edges, and tuck one end of the scrunchy inside the other. Sew a seam in a circular motion to avoid sewing the elastic to the fabric. It may be helpful to sew this part by hand with a needle and thread.

Tips & Warnings

• Fold and sew the raw edges of the short ends first, so the ends are ready to be sewn together as described in Step 4.

• Always use caution when sewing to prevent injury.
